Heritage County Park San Diego: Explore Historic Victorian Village

If you’re looking for an interesting way to spend a day with your family, consider a trip to San Diego’s Heritage County Park. The park is located at 2454 Heritage Park Row, San Diego, CA 92110. Near Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, and it features restored Victorian houses.

In addition to the park’s exterior architecture, the park also offers a variety of amenities. It features a lawn, a synagogue, and a chapel, making it an ideal location for weddings or other special events. Several Victorian homes in the park are restored, but most aren’t open to the public.

Temple Beth Israel, the first synagogue in San Diego, was moved to Heritage Park from its original location. Aside from hosting religious events, the temple is open to the public. Visitors can tour the building and attend receptions. Bar and bat mitzvahs are also held in the synagogue.

One of the park’s most famous features is the iconic wooden “water tower” slide. Before the mid-1990s, the wooden slide stood three stories high, and a tractor-tire maze was used. However, the slide was removed in the mid-2000s when the play area was redesigned.

Another popular attraction is the walkway around the pond. This pathway features several types of ducks that call the lagoon home. You can also visit the Senlis Cottage, an 1887 home built for Eugene Senlis. Although it was originally constructed without modern amenities, it still has its own guesthouse.

Another building that is open to visitors is the McConaughy House. The house was built in 1887 by Harfield Timberlake Christian. In addition to the house’s history, it’s also named after the man who founded the first scheduled freight and passenger service in San Diego.

Earlier in the 1800s, the area was occupied by the Amah Mutsun tribe. For thousands of years, they lived in the region. However, in the late 1700s, Spanish settlers arrived. With the expansion of downtown San Diego, the city’s Victorian architecture was threatened. Therefore, the County of San Diego decided to save the houses and restore them. More about San Diego.

Save Our Heritage Organization has been involved in the project, and it’s expected that the work will be completed by early to mid-2024. The county has a budget of $8 million, and will obtain a $5 million grant from the state. As part of the project, the interiors of the Victorian homes will be restored.

Among other things, the project will include an outdoor classroom, a lobby, and up to 23 guest rooms. Additionally, it will include new landscaping and public restrooms.

Other attractions that are part of the park include a self-guided interpretive walk that focuses on the natural history of Uvas Creek. There are also petroglyphs to view. More to read here.

Currently, the Parks and Recreation Department is working with the community to determine the type of amenities the park will offer. Those amenities will be determined through public meetings. Eventually, the park will include a nature-based play area for children, as well as lodges and camping opportunities.
