When visiting San Diego, you’ll want to dress appropriately for the climate. The city enjoys a moderate climate with an average daytime temperature of 70.5 degrees Fahrenheit (21.4 degrees Celsius). There’s a relatively low humidity level and sunny skies throughout the year. While you can expect to spend many days in a T-shirt and sandals, you’ll want to pack light and wear layers as early mornings and evenings can be quite cool.

San Diego’s growth was spurred by the California Southern railroad in 1885, which spurred rapid development. Soon, buildings and land filled the landscape and the population of the city grew by almost half. By 1887, downtown lots doubled in size, and the population was over 40,000. Spreckels was a major investor in the city and built a large dam to provide water for the city.

The city has an excellent job market, and is home to some of the most beautiful natural landscapes. Its golden cliffs provide a dramatic backdrop for the city’s beaches. You can enjoy a spectacular sunset from the shoreline year-round. Surfers love the currents along the stretch of sand from La Jolla to the northern beach communities.

The gold rush brought population growth and problems for the local people. General Bennett Riley called a constitutional convention in 1824 and selected Miguel de Pedrorena as the representative for San Diego. He was instrumental in drafting the constitution and setting boundaries. In 1849, a new governor was elected to the state, and Peter H. Burnett was elected as its first governor.

With over 70 miles of beach, San Diego has many things to do for the entire family. The city is home to the world-famous San Diego Zoo, SeaWorld San Diego, and LEGOLAND California. There are many museums, and visitors can explore the history of San Diego and learn about the city’s pioneers in history.

When the railroad came through San Diego in 1881, it brought new life and prosperity to the city. It also brought electricity. The first electric cars started operating in 1887 on D Street and Old Town. Only two towns west of the Mississippi had implemented trolley services before San Diego. Meanwhile, the city used Edison’s new fangled incandescent lamps to light homes and offices. The city’s first telephone company began operations with only thirteen subscribers. For sports enthusiasts, San Diego has a variety of professional and amateur teams. The San Diego Chargers play in the National Football League. There’s also the USHL’s San Diego Gulls. In addition to major league sports, the city also hosts two NCAA College Bowl games. The earliest settlements in San Diego, which later became Old Town, were built on the hillside. The town was once called Fort Guijarros. It was the capital of Upper and Lower California. The city ceased to be a military town once Juan Machado bought the land.
