San Diego Air & Space Museum

The San Diego Air & Space Museum is the nation’s largest aviation museum. It is located at 2001 Pan American Plaza, San Diego, CA 92101. Founded in 1969, the museum is a tax-exempt nonprofit corporation. It opened its doors in the Food and Beverage Building of Balboa Park with an impressive collection of planes and artifacts. The museum’s first exhibits included the Navy’s first seaplane, the Curtiss A-1, and a 1929 Fleet Model 7. A rocket engine from the Bell X-1 was on display, along with artifacts related to John J. Montgomery. Soon after, the museum needed a larger facility.

In addition to original historic aircraft and spacecraft, the museum also showcases a collection of replicas. Its collection of spacecraft includes the original Apollo 9 Command Module, as well as the Spirit of St. Louis replica. It also houses a Max Flight(r) simulator, which lets visitors experience full-motion multi-role flight in a space-themed aircraft. In addition, the San Diego Air & Space Museum has an observation deck, a 4D theater, and an air and space-themed restaurant called Flight Path Grill.

You can also see a F/A-18A Hornet, commonly known as the Blue Angel 1. A museum’s Modern Jet & Space Age gallery houses a Boeing GPS-12 satellite, as well as a X-15 supersonic rocket plane that helped lay the groundwork for the Space Shuttle program. An F-4J/S Phantom II is another highlight in the museum’s Flight Gallery.

The San Diego Air & Space Museum is affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution. It features a collection of historic aircraft and spacecraft from around the world, including the Apollo 9 Command Module. It is also home to the world’s only original GPS satellite. The museum is family friendly and is great for children.

The San Diego Air & Space Museum has some new additions to the museum. Visitors can enjoy a tasty meal at the Flight Path Grill on selected days of the month between 11am and 3:30pm. The prices range from $0.50 to $8 and there are daily specials. A free cookie with a combo purchase is another great feature.

A visit to the San Diego Air & Space Museum is an educational and fun way to explore the history and future of aerospace. The museum has a variety of exhibits and interactive media. There is even an entire section dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci. The museum is open daily except for Thanksgiving Day. Learn more about San Diego
