Founded in 1969, the museum is a tax-exempt nonprofit corporation. It opened its doors in the Food and Beverage Building of Balboa Park with an impressive collection of planes and artifacts. The museum’s first exhibits included the Navy’s first seaplane, the Curtiss A-1, and a 1929 Fleet Model 7. A rocket engine from the Bell X-1 was on display, along with artifacts related to John J.
